Progressives Sit Out 2024 Primary

By Carl Young
Republicans smashed Democratic turnout in the race to fill Lauren Boebert's vacant Congressional seat. While Adam Frisch was unopposed in the Democratic primary, a six-way race on the Republican side energized the right. Frisch polled 51,000 votes and the Republicans 87,695. Turnout in the Democratic stronghold of La Plata County also was low with Frisch receiving 5,405 votes to the GOP's 5,844. At home, Frisch received 1,136 votes compared with the GOP group receiving 2,411.
The CD03 GOP winner was Jeff Hurd, an Ivy League graduate and Grand Junction attorney who is thoroughly a MAGA partisan. Big-game trophy hunter and Christian nationalist Lou Webb of Durango edged Hurd in Archuleta County.
Former Commissioner John Ranson beat Zane Kraetsch 1,612 to 927 in the only contested county race.
Statewide turnout was 25%, lower than Archuleta County's 34.6%. Of the 11,038 active voters in the county, only 3,819 returned the ballots they received by mail.
